Two Volumes in One. New Editiion, Revised and Expanded. 4to (7 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches), contemporary full mottled calf, raised bands, red leather label, gilt spine decorations and lettering. Pp. (ii), 252; (iv), 315, (5), with 24 (of 25) folding maps and plates (lacks plate no. 3: “Habillement des Banians a Mekha”). Head of spine and upper front board near spine very lightly chipped (click on picture no. 2 to see how minor it is).
This is the third French edition. The first one was published in Copenhagen in 1773 and the second one was published in Amsterdam in 1774, hence this is the first edition in the French language published in France itself.
This copy includes the large folding map of Yemen, the long folding map of the Red Sea titled "Mare Rubrum sen Sinus Arabicus," and the map showing the bay of Suez, among others. The author was the only survivor of a party sent by the king of Denmark to survey and describe Arabia and the peninsula. The book also includes copies of Kufic manuscripts and illustrations and descriptions of important landmarks, buildings, and the people of Arabia, Egypt, Persia, and Hindustan.
Binding tight, ffep loosening, 1 plate misfolded, a few pages with some light spotting, but overall the contents are clean. A very attractive copy. Chadenat 1941, Gay 3589.
