Forrel over modern paper covered boards, 4to., pp. 1, (1), 4, 122.
The rare augmented second edition of 1643; the first edition with Pedro de Madriga's account about Peru and the first as well, of only two editions (together with the 1645 edition), to contain the important account of the Portuguese explorer de Queirós (or de Quiros) about the unknown continent of Australia. By Tiele this edition is considered the most important of all editions. Neither the first edition of 1626 nor the respective editions of 1648, 1652 and 1663 contain this account. Moreover this edition is the most comprehensive of all editions concerning Hermites account. Tiele, Mémoire Bibliographique sur les journaux des navigateurs Néerlandais, p. 81:
“La seule édition complète est donc l'édition hollandaise de 1643.Jacques l'Hermite (de Jonge) was born in Antwerp, early January 1582 and died near Callao the 2nd June 1624. In 1605 he left for Malaya as an important merchant and then served as counselor for East-India till 1612. In 1622 he was appointed commander of the "Nassausche Vloot" which sailed around the world during the years 1623 - 1626. Hermite died during the blockade of Callao de Lima in Peru.
Toutes les éditions allemandes & latines étant antérieures à celle-
là, elles ne peuvent contenir les augmentations importantes faites
après coup, d'après de bonnes sources."
As Tiele points out, this edition is the most important - and the only complete edition, in any language, of this account.
