Large folio (520 x 370 mm), pp. 4, 53, 1 plus preliminary and trailing blank. Original publisher's red morocco-backed cloth gilt. The spine divided in six compartments by five raised bands. Titles in the 2nd compartment, the other compartments gilt tooled. The front board richly gilt decorated, the rear board blind stamped.
Thirty striking beautiful charcoil plates hors texte by Alfred Henri Darjou (1832-1874), mounted on very heavy card stock within printed borders. The plates are protected by tissue guards on which the titles of the respected plates have been printed. Only 300 copies were printed of this book, of which this is no. 94.
Front board lightly soiled at top and bottom and the extremities slightly rubbed.
