Ernest Duvergier de Hauranne (1843-1877) visited the United States during the 1864 election and made many astute observations about it. For unknown reasons the book first was translated into English only in the 20th century, but probably, in the aftermath of the Civil War and the assasination of Abraham Lincoln, people didn't want to be reminded of this period in American history, still so fresh in their memories.
