Dozens and dozens of woodengravings in the text of which many fullpage plus a folding map.
Corners and head and tail of spine bumped. Closed tear at the bottom side of the map. One page with a dogear. Further a very clean copy throughout with the spine a little sunned.
Original blindstamped and gilt cloth. The gilt on the front board still very bright, the gilt on the spine a bit faded.
A very peculiar book in that sense that it seems to be very rare. For this 1858 first edition there are no auction records, there are no copies in institutional libraries worldwide, including the British Library and the Library of Congress and there are no bibliographical entries. Most institutional libraries have a copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition, both published in 1859, or of later editions.
Hess & Coger 5721 (for one of the 1859 editions).
