Original blindstamped purple cloth, 8vo., pp. xvi, 351, (1), 32 (ads). Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece plus four other engravings. Gilt titles on the spine. On the inner backboard a binders ticket ("Bound by Edmonds & Remnants, London") has been affixed. Spine darkened and slightly frayed at the tail, but gilt titles still very bright.

Lucy Finley (1817–1893) was born at Sunderland, co. Durham. Around 1840 she went to St Petersburg to take up a position as a governess. Here she met Thomas Atkinson, whom she married in 1848. She joined him on his travels to Siberia, the Kirgiz steppes and to the Chinese border. In 1854 they returned to the UK. In 1863 she published this book about her travels in the eastern part of the Russian empire.
